To take stock is to re-appraise a situation, a person, or one’s own position or prospects.
The purpose of this post is to provide a template for someone out there to have the opportunity of evaluating current situations of life, personal disposition and expected value. This review is based on what obtains from a particular period to another. It also gives you the opportunity to beam the search light on many areas of your life. The outcome should give you a clear picture of progress, stagnation or regression you have made over a period of time. This informed understanding will make you see where to improve on, what to do to start making progress or the overhauling to be done to address the stagnation experienced.
Life generally is like a system which comprises input, processes and output. This is similar to the events of life that come your way, what you do to deal with each event and what subsequent future outcomes you experience based on your decisions and actions.
For some people, you have new sets of friends, for others new relationships, new career paths, new jobs, shifts in financial state, higher levels of business transaction, increase or decrease in shapes and sizes, etc. These could be a progress, stagnation or regression, depending on where you chose to be.
It will be difficult to measure your progress if attention is not given to daily, weekly, monthly and yearly details of your life. Mistakes are inevitable, but it doesn’t have to stop your drive to keep learning and working. Previous wrong choices shouldn’t leave you with making no choice.
Some people dwell on what they could, would or should have done instead of appraising, improving and making better future results. You cannot rewrite the past, but you can re-write the future. Why waste time on the past to negatively judge your present reality? The following are some of the relevant questions you could use to generate the required steps to take in order to experience the desired results;
1.How much did I start with last year?
2.How much am I earning currently?
3.What exactly did I do to get to where I am?
4.How much knowledge have I acquired in the course of the year?
5.What level of result is my effort producing now compared to what it was at the beginning of last year.
6.What was my perspective about life in January 2013 and, now January 2014?
7.How is my relationship like in terms of people skills then and now?
8.How much of personal improvement have I gone through in the last one year?
9.How many steps did I take on my career path last year?
10.How much of responsibility did I have in January 2013 relative to January 2014?(as; Husband, wife, father, mother, brother, sister, etc)
I can go on and on. The point here is being able to assess what has been in every area of your life, draw inferences from them, and repositioning to achieve a greater result in the new calendar year. The stated points below are things you need to be or do in order to have a productive year ahead;
1.Deliberately create time to ponder over the activities of the day, week, month and year.
2.Ability to account for the events and its cost implication in your life.
3.Ability to display tenacity and boldness in the face of challenges.
4.Ability to be flexible and adaptable. Willingness to let go of your old mindset in order to take on new ones. Openness to new ways of doing things coupled with a filter to sieve the unwanted ways.
5.Ability to be focused. Developing the capacity to break free from distraction.
6.Willingness and determination to constantly improve on the quality of your life.
Depending on the situation of your life, your person or the tasks to be achieved in life, you must see and believe that productivity, progress and improvements are possible in the first place, and then take the corresponding actions listed. Stock taking is a critical approach to be adopted and used in life. It is one of the guaranteed ways that this year will be a great improvement on the last.
It is time to evaluate.
